Ecogate Smart Gates: Proven Longevity in Highly Abrasive Environments

At Ecogate, we engineer our systems for durability and reliability—even in the most extreme conditions. A real-world testament to this is the long-term performance of our rotating blade gates in a facility handling highly abrasive glass dust. A world-class company has relied on our technology for over a decade, proving the longevity of our technology.

14 Years of Reliable Performance at Owens Corning

Facility: FOAMGLAS®, Czech Republic

Owens Corning’s Pittsburgh Corning division produces FOAMGLAS® HLB 1000 insulation (ASTM) at their Czech Republic facility. Fourteen years ago, they implemented an Ecogate On-Demand Dust Collection System to optimize dust extraction while handling one of the most abrasive materials—glass particles and fibers.

After more than a decade of continuous operation, they remain highly satisfied with Ecogate’s performance. In fact, they are now placing an order for another system, reinforcing the long-term value of our technology.

Why Ecogate Rotating Blade Gates Excel in Abrasive Conditions

Ecogate rotating blade gates are available from 4” up to 26”, zinc-plated or stainless-steel

Initially, the facility tested Ecogate Butterfly Gates, but the abrasive nature of glass dust caused excessive wear over time. To address this, they switched to Ecogate Rotating Blade Gates, which have demonstrated exceptional durability under these harsh conditions.

Key Takeaways from 14 Years of Performance:

Minimal gate failures: Out of all installed gates, only one stopped functioning—due to excessive turbulence at the installed duct location.

Adherence to best practices: This reinforces the importance of proper gate placement to minimize airflow disturbances.

Continuous operation: All other gates remain fully functional, even as the facility has replaced its heavy-duty duct system multiple times.

Best Practices for Gate Installation:

✅ Install gates at least three duct diameters away from hoods, bends, or branches to prevent turbulence (both downstream and upstream at gate inlet and outlet).

✅ Reason for that is to Avoid locations with excessive airflow disturbances, as turbulent air accelerates abrasion and can cause material buildup inside the gate.

Built for Long-Term Reliability

Ecogate gates are rigorously tested to withstand industrial conditions. Our internal testing protocol mandates that new gate models undergo one million open-close cycles before approval.

  • For example, a 5-inch gate operates at approximately 5 seconds per cycle, translating to 5,000,000 seconds of continuous testing (about two months non-stop).

  • Following testing, the gate must remain fully functional with only expected mechanical wear. Prototypes that do not meet this standard are redesigned until they pass.

Do You Handle Abrasive Materials in Your Dust Collection System?
